Summer Kitchen Hacks – How to Store Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Summer brings a bounty of seasonal treasures—fragrant strawberries, crisp cucumbers, sun-kissed tomatoes. But high temperatures often mean that fresh produce spoils quickly. How can you keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer? Here are some tried-and-true summer storage tips!  

1. Not Everything Belongs in the Fridge

Although the fridge seems like the obvious choice, some fruits and vegetables don’t like the cold. Tomatoes lose their flavor and cucumbers turn mushy in low temperatures. A cool countertop or shaded basket is often better.  

2. Store Separately

Some fruits—like apples, pears, and bananas—release ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening of other produce. Keep them separate to prevent items like lettuce or cucumbers from spoiling too quickly.  

3. Paper Beats Plastic

Leafy greens such as arugula or spinach do best when wrapped in a paper towel and stored in a container. Paper absorbs excess moisture, helping to prevent wilting. Avoid plastic bags—they trap moisture and promote decay.  

4. Berries Need a Bath

Rinse delicate berries (like strawberries or blueberries) in a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water), then dry thoroughly and store in a paper towel-lined container. This slows down mold growth and keeps them fresher longer.  

5. Treat Herbs Like Flowers

Store fresh herbs like parsley or basil in a glass of water, just like a bouquet. Loosely cover with a plastic bag. Basil prefers room temperature, while dill or chives can go in the fridge.
